Dirk Hartog was the first known European explorer to land on the Western Australian coast. On 25 October 1616 his vessel the Eendracht made landfall at Dirk Hartog Island off the coast of Shark Bay. He left a pewter plate inscribed with a record of his visit, representing the oldest evidence of European contact with Australia. 25 October 2016 will mark the 400th anniversary of his landing.

The State Government secured funding from Royalties for Regions to coordinate a number of different initiatives, including the production of these Year 9 Science resources:  Return to 1616 Year 9 Ecology and Return to 1616 Year 9 Chemistry

The STAWA produced Year 9 Ecology resource uses the ecological restoration program currently underway at Dirk Hartog Island, ‘Return to 1616’. Both resources helps extend learning of the Dirk Hartog story through the Secondary School sciences.
