The John de Laeter Medal

The Medal

The Science Teachers’ Association of WA invites all West Australian science teachers to consider nominating a STAWA member for the

2012 de Laeter Medal for an outstanding contribution to science teaching.

Inaugurated in 1998, the de Laeter Medal is one mechanisms that formally recognises teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to science teaching in this State. This prestigious medal specifically recognises excellence in WA science teaching and seeks at the same time to enhance the status of the science teaching profession.

Criteria

A successful nominee for the de Laeter Medal will:

  • have had at least three (3) years continuous membership of the Association to the time of application;
  • be able to demonstrate outstanding classroom practice; and
  • be able to demonstrate a significant contribution to the profession (through, for example, inter-staff development, professional association work, district or regional networks, involvement in other organisations with a science education interest).

It remains at the discretion of the Selection Panel to decide whether the best nominee is sufficiently meritorious to be awarded the Medal.  One Medal only will be awarded each year.
